Anna Bais to contest Moresby Northwest seat

Former secretary to the Department for Community Development, Youth and Religion Anna Bais is contesting the by-election for Moresby Northwest.

The seat was vacant after sitting MP Sir Mekere Morauta passed on.

The Electoral Commission will issue writs for the by election soon after mourning of senior statesman and reformist concludes.

Bais told Post Courier she has resigned after 27 years in the public service to advocate for the advancement of grassroots.

She said leaving the public service to contest the elections is a sacrifice and she has prayed about this.

Since the retirement of Dame Carol Kidu as MP for Moresby South after 15 years no woman has faired well against male candidates in Port Moresby though few have contested.

This week Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates Dr Alphonse Gelu told NBC News their evaluation has indicated that voters tend to screen female candidates more than male candidates when it comes to campaign and voting.

The Office of the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates is working on this to ensure females get a fair chance during elections.
