Enzu Northern Chiefs Junior 7s Touch Tournament 2020 took place in Lihir over the weekend.
This was the first time for the tournament to take place thanks to the initiative of Jonathan Baul Totsik who is a former junior PNG Pukpuk.
Following the footsteps of his father in organizing sports in the community, Jonathan’s main aim was to bring unity among the youths in the community of Tzuen.
The theme of the tournament was unleashing the hidden talent, through sports.
“ We also focused on giving the youths a different mindset so they can be good and hardworking citizens in the community instead of getting involved in illegal activities,” said Totsik.
A total of 10 teams with boys between 14 years and 18 participated in the tournament.
The teams were Avengers, Bap Hunters, LaksBay, Liquor 1, Liquor 2, Young Star, MaiMai TsielTsiel, L4, Malo Tribes and Tura.
The young men showed great athleticism and sportsmanship.
In the end it was Bap Hunters who won the Cup, Maimai TsielTsiel were runner up and Avengers walked away with 3rd prize.
The tournament was hailed a success by the community and gave a much needed boost to the youth who participated.
Totsik thanked everyone who contributed to ensure the event was peaceful and enjoyable. Special acknowledgement was given to the Member for ward 11A Hon. Kaminiel Momon, Youth rep, Chalies Aeh and the community police.
Meanwhile the ENZU Northern Chief’s will be participating in the upcoming Sports Tok 7s Tournament from 28th – 29th November in Port Moresby.
“Bringing the boys out of the Tzuen community will be a grand opportunity for the boys to showcase their talents at the National level. Wearing the new uniform which has New Ireland inspired designs particularly the traditional designs of Hausboi and Mis will also give them a sense of patriotism for our province,” said Totsik.
The Enzu name comes from the word Tzuen in the Nothern side of Lihir island, which has a large population of youth who are eager to play sports.
